Hodler
The company I worked for acquired Hodler, a mobile crypto wallet with 100,000 users. The app was dated and losing users. My brief was to research the market, redesign the app, introduce new features and design a web version.
Process
Update the mobile app's core features
There were no Figma files or product metrics. The market had many crypto wallets, but few offered a strong experience.
Research the market and existing app
There were no Figma files or product metrics. The market had many crypto wallets, but few offered a strong experience.
Identify features to introduce
Competitors offered useful patterns, while reviews of our app helped identify unmet needs. Together, these informed a new solution.
Design screens, plan releases and develop monetisation
I introduced features gradually, based on priority. It was essential to keep the interface familiar to existing users.
Design an expanded web version
Alongside the mobile app, I designed the web version, drawing on established investment platform patterns.
Review implementation and analyse mobile updates
Design and development ran in parallel. We defined the logic together and maintained a release log, including user feedback.
Build the web version
The mobile app needed a web counterpart. This meant designing from scratch while keeping mobile and browser updates aligned.
Starting point: a mobile-only app
of Google Play page visitors install the app
On average, a user opens the home screen 145 times a month
On average, a user opens the coin screen 27 times a month
Most users opened the app to check coin prices
User pain points
Users could not understand why some coins rose while others fell.
Many users were at a loss, and fragmented reporting made it difficult to calculate returns across exchanges and ecosystems.
Investors often held assets across multiple crypto ecosystems. Combining them into one portfolio was technically difficult.
Users often followed investors on YouTube but struggled to find reliable, actionable strategies.
Competitors were several steps ahead
Established crypto products had large user bases, but their profit and loss reporting still left gaps.

More transactions mean more fee revenue for a crypto wallet
  • Incomplete loss reporting can leave users feeling more successful than they really are.
  • Anxiety can encourage frequent trading, increasing the wallet's commission revenue.
  • Frequent market monitoring creates demand for paid alerts and tracking features. News subscriptions offer another potential revenue stream.
How could we stay transparent and profitable?
Honest return reporting can be discouraging for investors who have lost money. I explored ways to support better decisions: recognising progress, suggesting portfolio adjustments and:
  • Showing accurate analytics for each coin, wallet and portfolio
  • Connecting price changes with news and leveraged trading data
  • Showing successful investors' portfolios and enabling users to follow them
These features could differentiate the product and support a paid version built on transparent information.
A standout feature
I reviewed feedback on around ten competitor apps. A recurring need was guidance from experienced investors. Tinkoff Investments and TradingView also demonstrated the value of news and forecast summaries. Hodler's analytics showed strong interest in news. This led to Investideas: a section combining notable purchases, success stories, trader following and financial news.
Follow experienced investors
Explore investors by category, view their recent purchases and portfolio allocations, and compare their decisions with the news to learn from them.
